Who is supporting which presidential candidate, and why?

As political parties decide on their final candidates with South Korea’s 19th presidential election a little over 30 days away, attention is turning to why certain supporters are backing particular candidates. The reasons people are supporting former Minjoo Party leader Moon Jae-in, former People’s Party leader Ahn Cheol-soo, and South Gyeongsang Gov. Hong Joon-pyo are as different as the candidates’ positions.

Results from a survey of 1,512 adults nationwide conducted by the polling organization MRCK on Mar. 30-Apr. 1, commissioned by the Hankyoreh and the Hankyoreh Economy & Society Research Institute, showed 9.8% of respondents citing the need for a “different administration in power” when asked why they supported Moon. Other responses included “because he’s better than the other candidates” (7.3%), “because of the party” (7%), and “because I trust him” (6.3%). With the snap election scheduled due to the scandal surrounding Park Geun-hye and Choi Sunsil, voters are happy with the strong prospects that Moon - a solid first in the polls - will usher a different party into power. The support base has also emerged as a defined “force” as support for the Minjoo Party has led to support for its presidential candidate.

In contrast, common reasons given for supporting Ahn included that he was “refreshing” (7.9%), “honest” (6.1%), and “someone with integrity” (5.9%). The responses suggest many voters hold positive feelings toward Ahn as a person. Conversely, just 0.9% and 1% of respondents respectively said they were supporting Ahn “to bring a new party into power” or “because of his party.” In Moon‘s case, very few respondents said they supported him because he was “refreshing” (0.3%) or “honest” (1.8%) - an indication of his and Ahn’s very different strengths.

For Liberty Party Korea candidate Hong Joonpyo, the most common reason given for support was that he was “a conservative” (14.9%). Other reasons cited for backing Hong, who has emerged as the “relief pitcher” for embattled conservatives facing disaster with Park Geun-hye’s arrest, including “because of the party” (13.5%), “because he isn’t tainted by politics” (5.9%), and “because he speaks the truth” (5.2%).

With such big differences in reasons for support, the three candidates’ major support bases show almost no overlap. (…)

A poll on support in a hypothetical five-way presidential race showed Moon drawing 40.6% of votes to Ahn 26.4%. It‘s a difference of 14.2 percentage points, down significantly from the 21.6 percentage point difference seen in another five-way race poll performed by Research Public, commissioned by the Hankyoreh on Mar. 17-18. Hong came in third with 9.4%, followed by Yoo with 4.3% and Shim with 2.8%.
